Faculty
We are part of the Institute for Visual & Analytic Computing. The chair of Visual Computing is headed by Prof. Oliver Staadt. The chair of Visual Analytics has been filled by Stefan Bruckner since February 1, 2023. Until March 2020, Prof. Heidrun Schumann held the chair of Computer Graphics. Prof. Christian Tominski is adjunct professor for Human-Data Interaction. Visiting professor Prof. Paul Rosenthal works on human-centered data analytics.
Chair of Visual Computing
Prof. Dr. sc. techn. ETH Oliver Staadt is a full professor of Computer Science, Director of the Institute of Visual and Analytic Computing, and was, from 2016-2018, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Rostock. He received a Master of Science in computer science and a PhD in computer science from TU Darmstadt and ETH Zurich, respectively. Prior to joining the University of Rostock, he was an Assistant Professor of computer science at the University of California, Davis, where he was also the director of the Virtual Reality Laboratory.
Chair of Visual Analytics
Prof. Dr. techn. habil. Stefan Bruckner is head of the chair of Visual Analytics. From 2013 to 2023 he was professor of visualization at the Department of Informatics of the University of Bergen, Norway. He received his master's degree (2004) and Ph.D. (2008), both in Computer Science, from the TU Wien, Austria, and was awarded the habilitation (venia docendi) in Practical Computer Science in 2012. Before his appointment in Bergen in 2013, he was an assistant professor at the Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms of the TU Wien.
Chair of Computer Graphics (Emerita)
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Heidrun Schumann was head of the chair of Computer Graphics from 1992 until March 2020. Her research interests were in the areas of information visualization and Visual Analytics, particularly including the visualization of structures and multivariate data in space and time. Last research projects were focused on investigating scalable visualization methods, on designing visual interfaces for smart environments, and also on developing application-specific solutions for the visualization of terrains or biomedical data.
Professor of Human-Data Interaction
apl. Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Christian Tominski has been a professor for Human-Data Interaction since 2021. His research focuses on the visualization of and interaction with data. He is particularly interested in effective and efficient techniques for interactive exploration and editing of complex data. Christian has published numerous works on new visualization and interaction techniques for multivariate data, temporal data, geospatial data, and graphs. He is also a co-author of three books.
Guest Professor
Prof. Dr. Paul Rosenthal is a guest professor at the University of Rostock. His research concentrates on reliability and reproducibility in visualization and on user-friendly human-machine interfaces.
